Sunday 13th May 2018: Seventh Sunday of Easter (B)

“Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying, “ Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one” (John 17:11b).

Today, the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles sets before us the early Church as she elects the man whom God called to replace Judas Iscariot in the college of the Apostles. It is interesting to note that this vacant position has one singular job description: service. Indeed, Matthias, on whom the choice falls, receives a mission which Peter defines in these words: “One of these men… must become a witness with us to His [Jesus’] resurrection” (Acts 1:21-23).

In this way Peter sums up what it means to be part of the Twelve: it means to be a witness to Jesus’ resurrection. If we are to successfully carry on this mission of evangelization, we need to remain in the risen Christ and in his love, as St. John reminds us in the Second reading: “He who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16). An essential aspect of witness to the risen Lord is unity among ourselves, his disciples, in the image of his own unity with the Father.

Hence, in the Gospel, Jesus prayed that they may all be one (John 17:11b).

Besides love and Unity, prayer and openness to the guidance of the Holy Spirit are among the central messages of today. Prior to the major decisions in our life, we need to pray and seek the guidance of the advocate, our Counsellor, the Holy Spirit. As this Mass is our Upper Room, let us imitate our Mother Mary and the Apostles, who prayed before Matthias was selected, who kept the faith, who waited patiently and prayerfully in unity for the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, come next Sunday.

Liturgy of the Word

First reading: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 1:15-17,20-26
